जैसा कि आप को पता होगा यह गीत सुप्रसिद्ध कवि
मुहम्मद इकबाल ने 1904-1905 में लिखा था
इस गीत का अंग्रेजी शब्दार्थ निम्नलिखित है

The real beauty of the first verse is that it turns around
Iqbal's arguably communal and national hymn into a
cry of of the oppressed and anguished that is neither
communal nor chauvinist nor nationalist, but internationalist.
वे कहते हैं कि इकबाल की एक दूसरी नज्म
“तराना ए हिन्द” से लिये गये खंड भी पहचाने जा
सकते हैं विशेषतः भारतीयों के लिये,
जो जानते हैं “सारे जहां से अच्छा”
ऎ आब ए-रुद-ए गंगा, वो दिन याद है तुझको,
उतरा तेरे किनारे जब कारवां हमारा
जिसके लिये परोडी है: सडकों पे घूमता है अब कारवां हमारा
और आखिरी पंक्ति जो बहुत से लोग नहीं जानते:
इकबाल कोई महरुम, अपना नहीं जहां में,
मालूम क्या किसी को, दर्द-ए-निहां हमारा
या फिर “तराना-ए-मिल्ली” से जो इस तरह से है,
ऎ गुलिस्तां-ए-अन्दालस, वो दिन याद है तुझ को,
था तेरी डालियों में जब आशियां हमारा ?
Overall, it seems to him that the song takes a somewhat
dim view of the lofty and grandiose nationalism of Iqbal
by presenting some home-truths about real present day life.
